Kaikoura Bound

On the last day of our holidays we were coming home from Kaikoura. The water crashed against the rocks as we rounded a bend.. Gazing out the window I spied a cave and a couple seals on the rocks so we pulled over and started to climb down the slippery rocks. I felt cold and curious. By the time Mum had got the camera Dad was already down. We waited on Mum to come. Meanwhile Haidee said, “Hey is that a seal in the cave?” As we went closer we found the cave was like seal town. We got good photos of the slippery seals. Big, small, scruffy and silky seals. We then climbed back up the dark rocks and hopped back in the car.

About 15 minutes later further down the seaside I caught a glimpse out the corner of my eye. Something was splashing in the water close to the horizon. I was looking through the binoculars and yelled, “mum stop I see a dolphin.” We pulled over and there it was behind the yellow boi bobbing in the sea. Yes it was a dolphin it looked like it had a white tummy then different shades of grey. While we were having a good look at the dolphin Haidee stayed in car because she thought I was lying. After that we headed off back on the road by this time it had got very hot but still windy.

The sun shone on the water and we stopped one more time before we drove into land. There were some awesome rock pools & We started to explore. I caught a glimpse of something strange under a rock it looked a lot like some sort of tentacle I picked up the rock and felt the pail tentacle thing. I flipped it over and it was a Paula shell sparking in the water. I had found four on this holiday. We found two starfish, one brown and one orange and blue. I picked the brown one up because I wasn't too sure about the other one. It was slimy but also grippy. My dad and Haidee found these two rock pools more like swimming pools one was about 2 and half meters deep and the next one didn't have as many cool features but was like 3 times the size of me!

There was so much seaweed, like even more seaweed than water. As started to head back that’s when the seagulls left. The water had risen while we were out on the rocks. Haidee and Dad had gone back. Suddenly the salty fish smelling water creeped up over our shoes. We had to search for the stepping stones that had quickly been covered over. Mum thought the water was cold but it wasn’t much colder than our pool at home. So we are off away from the sea. It was had been a great holiday!
